BMW 7 Series Sedan 740Li Review: 7 is the magic number
Azfar Hashim was there when BMW launched their F01 7 Series four years ago, now he heads to Yogyakarta to sample the updated 740 Li – any impact?
That’s not all – to make it even technically advanced, there’s a new ‘Coasting’ mode (only in EcoPro). What it does is decouple the engine when you release the accelerator - anywhere between 50 to 160km/h - allowing the car to freewheel with no engine braking effect. Think along the lines of declutching in a manual transmission, and you’ll get what I mean. The kinetic energy, working in tandem with the car’s driving aid, adversely saves up to 5% of petrol.
I also managed to sample the 730 Ld. Boasting an improved 3.0-liter six-cylinder twin turbo ‘Advanced Diesel’ engine, it develops an impressive 258 bhp – just 62 bhp shy of the 740 Li. The headline figure though is the 560 Nm of torque, which laughs in the face of the 740 Li’s 450 Nm.
And so it seems BMW hasn’t lost its touch in the luxury sedan game. The list of technical updates ensures it remains relevant next to the Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS and even Jaguar XJ. Whether you’re behind the wheel or simply watching the world go by at the back seat, the 740 Li can be engaging one moment, and super comfortable the next.
In fact its comfort level has so much effect, wish the flight back were equally comfortable…
