BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo 335i M Sport Review: Big three

BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo 335i M Sport Review: Big three

The 5-series GT wasn't as popular on the sales charts as BMW had hoped. Mostly due to its ungainly body lines. This latest 3-series GT is the company's second take on the concept.

What we like:
pros
Immense space all around. Most of the 3 series driving dynamics remains with just a smidgen of sacrifice in the name of practicality.
What we dislike:
cons
None come to mind.

Powered by the same proven 3.0-litre N55 twin scroll powerplant that is found in a number of BMW models, the 306bhp engine gets the large car to 100kmh in just 5.4 seconds. Impressive, considering the car tips the scales at 1.7 tons.

Naturally with the increase in size, weight, wheelbase and raised ride height, there will be a penalty on the standard 3-series agility. With the softer suspension taken off the touring 3-series, the GT rides more comfortably than your standard 3 series.

Toss the large GT into a bend and you will find the familiar handling of a BMW still present. Steering is sharp and precise with little lag from driver input. But the driver will feel the additional girth and lean from the additional length and increase in height. Even in ‘Sport’ mode.

In cruise mode, the 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly and without notice from the driver. While the ride remains comfortable and controlled.

Conlcusion

There’s no doubt that the 3 series Gran Turismo is deserving of its flagship status in the range. With its blend of comfort, power, performance and space, the GT sacrifices little in terms of dynamic performance over the sedan equivalent.

If space is your main concern over a 3 series sedan, you have your answer.
