A Swede Roll
Volvo’s new XC60 blends excellent sporty staying with that of what most would expect out of a premium SUV. With Singapore’s growing taste for most things SUV-ish, Volvo has delivered a car which we could safely say, takes things a notch up, and doing it Volvo’s own way.
With 400Nm of torque on tap and 320bhp, the 2.0 litre T6 engine is twin-charged, with a supercharger helping with low-end torque, and gets the XC60 to 100km/h in a very respectable 5.9 seconds; with the engine delivering this performance in linear style.
Ride comfort is near-excellent. We would prefer however the rims to be a size smaller, with more rubber, as we learnt very quickly that skipping over worn-down road surfaces, with tree roots under them, sends a series of jolts, which are fortunately arrested by the optional air suspension.
But we must admit, that road handling is very impressive for a car this tall, even when the 2,865mm wheelbase is on the longer side, and in our books built with a lean to a comfortable drive.
Safety is always a priority with any Volvo, and the XC60 does impress with Oncoming Lane Mitigation and Run-off Road Mitigation, just some of the built-in features, ensuring that cars are able to steer back into lane and away from the path of oncoming vehicles, and to prevent the car from leaving a road respectively.
Compared to its German counterparts, the Volvo styling is actually a very refreshing change, and we do truly like the materials and build quality of the dash. With the optional air suspension providing better access, the XC60 can be quite a bit of fun to own, allowing this road-biased SUV to go (just a little more) where other cars would not.
