A Gentleman's Suit

A Gentleman's Suit

Some of you will say, but it’s a Golf R under the hood. And you’re not too wrong. But the S3 is not all just wrapping an A3 body over the Golf, as Clifford Chow finds out. There must always be a hot small sedan/hatch/coupe offered by luxury car manufacturers these days, to satisfy a younger generation of drivers, who are hungry for something of a classy whip...  So Audi had heeded the call and not only built a Sportback, but also one with a boot. The S3 has another trick up its sleeve, under “Dynamic” mode, and lugging the transmission into “Sport” mode, also opens up the exhaust flaps. What would once be a quiet cruiser now carries with it an angry burble and plenty of pops under gear changes and acceleration, and the orgasmic exhaust notes resonates through the rear of the cabin. This alone, my friends, is so satisfying, I am tempted to almost say that the S3 is all-the-car that you need.

But more importantly, it is how Audi has delivered a car that is so refined in ride quality and build, yet is able to perform toe to toe with those unexpectedly from a different league. It is not an RS, which makes it more civilised. While a Golf R would come across as "Big Brother Hot Hatch", the Audi is more mature, refined, and like a gentlemen’s suit, should feel tailored and must fit snugly. The S3 Sedan does all of this.
