Growing up, I admired the Toyota Alphard as it glided across the screen in iconic Hong Kong action movies, often ferrying triad bosses with a commanding presence matched only by their black-clad entourages. In this cinematic universe, these weren’t mere villains—they were symbols of power, arriving in scenes with the Alphard as a fitting extension of their influence. The MPV’s reputation as the go-to luxury vehicle for tycoons, executives, and movie icons cemented it as a status symbol with as much star power as the actors it chauffeured. Finally sitting behind the wheel, I’m reliving that allure—feeling every bit of the prestige and nostalgia that once captivated me.

Birth of an Icon

The Alphard’s story begins in the early 2000s, when Toyota sought to elevate the concept of people movers. It wasn’t enough to have space and practicality; luxury and style were part of the equation. Unlike its utilitarian counterparts, the Alphard oozed opulence. It quickly became the ride of choice not just for corporate elites, but also for Hong Kong’s cinematic crime lords—its spacious, tinted cabin a perfect retreat for making underworld deals.

Fast forward to 2024, and the Alphard still holds its place as the pinnacle of Toyota’s people-moving lineup. It’s more than a vehicle; it’s an experience of luxury on wheels that’s deeply rooted in pop culture lore. And while the previous Alphard models carved their niche with luxury and an imposing aura, the 2024 iteration refines and elevates this legacy, moving ever closer to the realm of Lexus-level opulence.

Interior Refinement: Familiar Elegance with a Touch of Flair

Climbing into the 2024 Alphard, you’re immediately greeted by a sense of grandeur. The beige interior option exudes warmth, luxury, and a welcoming charm that contrasts beautifully with the edgier, more business-like ambiance of its sibling, the Vellfire. The split sunroof design is rather unique, and a welcome departure from the usual one-piece panoramic roofs. It allows sunlight to cascade through the cabin in a soft and rather elegant manner, emphasizing the expansive space within and offering occupants a chance to bask in natural light without feeling overly exposed.

The cabin layout has a familiar Toyota sensibility, balanced with an undeniable Lexus-like polish. The quality of materials is top-notch, with leather upholstery, carefully appointed trims, and soft-touch panels throughout. It’s puzzling, however, why Toyota decided to include paddle shifters in an MPV like this—perhaps an unnecessary nod to sportiness. Still, with the plush seats and attention to detail, it’s hard not to feel pampered. A few minutes inside, and you’re transported into a space of calm and luxury.

A Commanding Drive

Behind the wheel, the Alphard surprises. For a vehicle of its size, it moves with unexpected grace. My first proper drive at sunset left a lasting impression—there’s something magical about cruising in such refined comfort while watching the golden hues of the day fade away. Despite its hefty dimensions, the Alphard’s steering remains light and predictable, making it a breeze to drive and manoeuvre.

Under the hood lies a 247 hp 2.5-litre hybrid powertrain, seamlessly blending a traditional engine with an electric motor to optimize fuel efficiency and power delivery. Transitioning back to a Toyota CVT setup took some adjusting for me, especially when confronted with the characteristic "droning whine" under mid to heavy acceleration. But with time, I found myself appreciating the familiarity, the ease, and the overall smoothness of the system. Driven reasonably, I was able to achieve a commendable 14.2 km/L fuel economy, with around 50% EV driving—a testament to Toyota's class-leading hybrid technology.

The height of the Alphard also offers a commanding view of the road. Sitting higher than most SUVs gives drivers a distinct sense of control and oversight, not to mention ease of entering and exiting the vehicle.

Luxury Meets Practicality

Practicality and luxury need not be mutually exclusive, and Toyota understands this balance well. The Alphard doesn’t just transport; it cocoons passengers in comfort. The conventional suspension with a rear double-wishbone setup soaks up road imperfections, ensuring a ride that is as smooth as it is composed. Toyota’s engineers have prioritized quietness; acoustic glass and enhanced insulation ensure that the world outside stays exactly where it belongs. Conversations flow naturally, and there’s a sense of calm that washes over you the moment you shut the door. It’s a fitting homage to the Alphard’s roots as a mobile headquarters—discreet, protected, and indulgently plush.

When it comes to rear-seat comfort, the Alphard’s reputation as a mobile lounge is well-earned. While my time at the back was limited, I quickly fell in love with its plush ottoman captain seats. Rear passengers are treated to an experience that borders on first-class air travel. The integrated screens, ambient lighting, and thoughtful placement of controls ensure that every moment spent in the back is as engaging or relaxing as desired.

Verdict: A Regal Presence, Redefined

To myself at least, the 2024 Toyota Alphard is not merely a vehicle; it’s a statement of luxury and legacy, a modern embodiment of everything that made its predecessors revered. It continues to blend opulence with practicality, tradition with innovation. As a fan of cinematic nostalgia, I can’t help but appreciate how it captures the commanding presence of towkays, while embracing the needs of today's discerning passengers.

If you crave a blend of steadfast dependability, modern luxury, and an impressive road presence—all wrapped in one meticulously crafted MPV—the Alphard should be amongst the top of your list. Toyota has once again delivered a masterpiece, proving that some legends don’t just fade away—they evolve, and they get better.
