BMW seems to have taken the best bits of their model line and distilled it into the 220i…

What we like:
pros
Compact dimensions with nimble handling and excellent weight distribution makes for a remarkable drive.
What we dislike:
cons
Entry into rear seats can be difficult for older folks.

With such promising dimensions, the 2-series is a tantalizing drive no matter what’s under the bonnet. In the 220i, we find a strong 2.0-litre twin scroll four cylinder with 184bhp and 270Nm from 1,250rpm. This low torque entry means the 220i is ideally suited for darting around city traffic.

And what the compact dimensions promises, the engine delivers and the 220i is a joy to drive around city traffic. Darting between slower traffic like a restless bee. When we said BMW seems to have bottled up the best bits of their range into this compact body, we weren’t lying.

The steering is creamy smooth with direct action between you and the road. The car is so delightfully responsive that you will seek out what little B-road driving you can find on our island just to enjoy it. The car seems well balanced in the bends and maintains a neutrality through the turn and being rear wheel drive, the rear is easily modulated with your right foot.

On long distance drives, the cabin is well insulated from road noise and the suspension is well-tuned to handle the odd bumps and imperfections of the road. The 8-speed automatic isn’t noticed most of the time because it does its job so brilliantly.

Conclusion

The 220i isn’t particularly powerful and if power is what you want, we’d suggest looking to the 228i. What this variant offers is poise, balance and pure driving fun without the harshness of a brutish sports coupe.

And when the fun dies down, what you have left is a handsome compact coupe that’s comfortable on the road, sits four and has no problems getting the groceries. But we don’t’ suggest putting your parents in the back though.
